In the fall of 2014, I found myself several months into a journey that had already taken me from Alaska to Hawaii, across New Zealand and Australia, through Asia, and into the heart of Europe. By September, I had landed in Vienna.
One evening, after wandering through the streets of the city, I walked into a theater to watch A Most Wanted Man with Philip Seymour Hoffman. When I stepped back out into the crisp night air, the city was dark, quiet, and a bit mysterious — too perfect not to explore.
As I made my way toward the Vienna Opera House, I noticed another tall building directly across the street. I made it up to a small perch, set up my tripod, and began working out the perfect long exposure. I must’ve taken dozens of shots, adjusting for the passing trams, shifting lights, and the slight shake from the cold as I huddled next to that wall.
But I knew I had something special.
This is that frame — a photograph born from a moment of stillness, curiosity, and determination. It’s been one of my favorite images ever since, reminding me that some of the best photographs come when you’re just wandering through the world, open to possibility.
