A Maasai Herder in Tanzania

Today’s photograph is one of my most meaningful — a Maasai warrior standing in a field with his cows in the heart of Tanzania.
In the fall of 2014, I was on safari in the Maasai Mara, deeply moved by the wildlife and the rhythm of life unfolding on the savannah. One day, during a break in the drive, I asked my guide a question that came from pure curiosity: “Is there any way I could stay with the Maasai — not just visit, but actually live in the village for a few days?”
At first, he laughed. That’s not something tourists normally do. But I asked again. And again. Finally, he smiled, and said, “Let me speak to the elders.”
The next day, he returned with permission. And just like that, I found myself saying yes to an invitation I will never forget.
For 3 days, I lived among the Maasai. Not in a lodge, not a day trip, but in their world. I slept in a traditional mud hut — built by the women of the village using a wooden frame plastered with a mix of mud, water, and cow dung. I photographed their daily rituals, shared meals, danced, and learned about their centuries-old customs. The warriors wore bright red shúkàs, a color that symbolizes bravery and is believed to help deter lions while herding cattle in the bush. The simplicity and strength of their lives made a profound impact on me.
This photograph was taken in one of those quiet moments — a warrior in his crimson cloak, watching over his cows in the serene African landscape. Before I left, they gifted me a carved wooden club, a rungu, that still sits on my shelf today — a reminder of one of the most transformative experiences of my life.
And while it’s more difficult today to have an experience this raw and immersive, it’s still possible. If you’re respectful, curious, and have a relationship with a trusted local guide, you may just find yourself welcomed — not as a tourist, but as a temporary member of the village.
Some moments change your photos. Others change your life. This trip did both.
