This photograph was taken in Yosemite in 2019 — just before sunset, as I was hiking alone down from Glacier Point. The sky was beginning to burn with light, the granite walls glowing in the last moments of the day. By the time I reached the bottom, the trail was wrapped in darkness, and only the beam of my headlamp guided me forward.
It’s in those moments — quiet, solitary, and humbling — that Yosemite feels closest to what John Muir once described as “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.”
There’s something sacred in watching the day disappear over this valley, knowing that millions have stood in awe here, yet somehow, it still feels entirely personal — as if the light is performing just for you.
I’ve always believed that photographs don’t just capture what we see — they hold the feeling of where we stood, what we heard, and what it meant to be alive in that instant. This was one of those moments for me.
