There is something magical about the coastline of Nazaré, Portugal at sunset. The Atlantic Ocean stretches endlessly into the horizon, the cliffs glow with warm evening light, and the sound of crashing waves echoes below the old lighthouse at Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo. Standing here with my drone in the air and my camera gear beside me felt surreal.
Nazaré is famous today for its giant waves — some of the largest ever surfed on Earth — but this town’s history stretches back centuries. Long before surfers arrived chasing world records, Nazaré was a rugged fishing village tied deeply to the sea. Fishermen still launch colorful boats from the beach, and the old fort and lighthouse that sit dramatically on the cliffs once served as protection and guidance for sailors navigating the dangerous Atlantic coastline.
I spent the evening wandering the cliffs photographing the changing light as sunset settled across the water. Watching people gather at the overlook reminded me that no matter where we come from, human beings are naturally drawn toward beauty and the ocean. There’s something timeless about standing at the edge of the world watching the sun disappear into the sea.
The drone gave me a perspective I could never have seen from the ground. From above, the cliffs of Nazaré reveal just how dramatic this landscape truly is — the layers of rock, the crashing surf below, and the tiny lighthouse perched defiantly against the Atlantic winds. It is one of the most visually incredible coastlines I have ever photographed.
Portugal continues to surprise me every time I visit. Between Porto, Lisbon, Sintra, and now Nazaré, I keep finding places filled with history, soul, and unforgettable light. These are the moments that remind me why I always carry my camera gear wherever I go in the world.
